Once a destination for vacationing wealthy New Yorkers, Harlem became the center of a black cultural and artistic movement called the Renaissance. Harlem was the center of a rich nightlife that coincided with the Jazz Age, bringing New Yorkers from all walks of life to experience the neighborhood. Learn about African American history and culture and the significance of the Black church not only as a religious body but social and political platform for the advancement of people of color. Walk along 125th Street and see the Apollo theater and the Theresa hotel. Explore Harlem’s famous sites like City College, Morningside Heights, Sugar Hill, the Morris Jumel Mansion, Sylvan Terrace, Strivers Row, Hamilton Grange, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Feel the spirit of celebration during our mid-week gospel concert. The Harlem Gospel Ensemble is a local choir that performs gospels, spirituals, and original music in the Acapella style.
